Holistic Servant Leadership Development Approach

In developing holistic servant leaders, LPAC aims to:

Guide children, youth, and adults to

a life-long calling of personal and community growth.

Toward this end, we employ the holistic servant leadership development strategy:

a.   Holistic Continuum of Personal Development

In developing Holistic Servant Leaders, LPAC guides children, youth, and adults through our Holistic Continuum of Personal Development™, a three-phase developmental process based on our Four Principles of Holistic Ministry™.

By advancing through the Holistic Continuum of Personal Development™, children, youth, and adults engage in general, active, and holistic participation.   Consequently, scores emerge as strong, independent, articulate leaders who legitimately represent and are accountable to their communities.

ª  GAIN:       They participate in basic-level activities that enable them to GAIN knowledge and develop their skills.

ª  GROW:     They participate in intermediate-level activities that enable them to GROW in their knowledge and skills, and test them in organization activities and events.

ª  GIVE:        They give back by assuming service and teaching roles within the organization, their schools, and their communities.

Each participation level builds on the previous phase(s); subsequently, these people enhance their ability to commit to a life-long calling of personal and community growth.  Ultimately, they develop a greater sense of self, and serve as a resource to their peers.  They also work with other people to strengthen the Four Pillars of Community Life™.

b.   Five Dimensions of Personal Development

As children, youth, and adults advance through our Holistic Continuum of Personal Development™, LPAC focuses them on our Five Dimensions of Personal Development™.  These dimensions are personal growth areas that enable children, youth, and adults to be:

ª  Effective leaders with strong moral character,

ª  Peace makers,

ª  Literate (effective communicators),

ª  Successful in school and/or their job,

ª  Physically fit and arts-oriented,

ª  Engaged in their family life,

ª  Active in community affairs, and

ª  Mentors to their peers or younger individuals.

As children, youth, and adults become more purposeful about their growth and development, they participate in more of the program areas—even though we do not expect the dimensions to operate at optimal levels all at once.

Spiritual                                                                        Love with all your Heart

The Spiritual (Heart) dimension deals primarily with Character Development. Children, youth, and adults strengthen their character and become holistic: strong, independent, articulate leaders who legitimately represent and are accountable to their families and communities.  They receive character building and spiritual development training, and lead personal and community initiatives related to our Four Principles of Holistic Ministry™.  They also receive leadership and group building skills training, lead group projects, and assume decision-making or advisory roles in LPAC, school, family, and community.

Success in the Spiritual dimension includes exercising leadership and service roles in schools, communities, and religious congregations.

Emotional                                                                        Love with all your Soul

The Emotional (Soul) dimension deals primarily with Violence Prevention.  Children, youth, and adults learn conflict resolution techniques and serve as conflict mediators.  They receive conflict resolution and conflict mediation training.  They also train their peers in conflict resolution, and serve as mediators within their programs and in school and community settings.

Success in the Emotional dimension includes managing conflicts non-violently and serving as conflict mediators.

Mental                                                                              Love with all your Mind

The Mental (Mind) dimension deals primarily with Literacy & Academic/Job Achievement.  Children, youth, and adults become effective readers, improve their performance in formal schooling, and obtain and maintain meaningful employment.  They work on reading assignments, receiving technical support through ESL classes, book clubs, and other literacy services.  They work on particular academic assignments through homework assistance, tutoring, and small learning circles and receive college preparation support.  They receive world of work preparation, as well as post-employment training to achieve upward job mobility.

Success in the Mental dimension includes fluency in English, computer literacy, reading literacy, high grade point averages (GPA), high GED/SAT scores, high school/college graduation, and gainful employment.

Physical                                                                   Love with all your Strength

The Physical (Strength) dimension deals primarily with Arts & Recreation. Children, youth, and adults improve their arts acumen and/or athletic ability.  They receive sports-related instruction, and engage in team activities and tournaments.  They also take arts-related lessons, and participate in exhibits and contests.

Success in the Physical dimension includes exercising regularly, maintaining nutritional diet, being literate in the arts, and playing a sport.

Social                                                                 Love your Neighbor as yourself

The Social (Neighbor) dimension deals with Community Involvement, Family Engagement, and Mentoring.  Children, youth, and adults become active members of their nuclear and extended families; plan, implement, and evaluate community building efforts; and motivate their peers and young individuals to become holistic.  They are trained on community assessments, community development, community service, and community building.  They also design and implement community beautification and revitalization projects, and volunteer in program activities and special events.  They attend workshops and social events, and receive support to relate effectively to family members and go on family outings.  They are trained on mentoring, active listening, effective communication, empathy, counseling, and fellowship.  Mentors and mentees establish ongoing relationships, where they meet periodically to discuss personal, family, school, and community issues.

Success in the Social dimension includes being active in family affairs, participating in family activities, participating in community revitalization and building projects, volunteering and/or financially supporting community organizations, establishing small businesses responsive to community needs, holding school officials responsible for improved school performance, engaging other faith-based and community-based organizations in community improvement efforts, and mentor peers and younger members.

c.   Personal Development Matrix™

To gauge the progress of children, youth, and adults, we utilize our Personal Development Matrix™, which is the convergence of our Holistic Continuum of Personal Development™ (Horizontal) and our Five Dimensions of Personal Development™ (Vertical).  The Personal Development Matrix™ enables staff members to track the involvement of children, youth and adults in the organization’s ministries.  Staff members are able to see at a glance the areas in which participants have taken part, as well as the areas in which they can encourage them to take part.  Participants themselves also can see their own movement, which would inspire them to get involved in unexplored areas.
